Our 6-hour morning charter on Lake Michigan is your ticket to hooking into monster Chinooks, feisty Cohos, acrobatic Steelhead, and hard-fighting Lake Trout. We've got all the gear you need - just bring your license and a good attitude. From May through early September, we're hitting the water every Thursday through Sunday to put you on the fish. Picture this: You're cruising out of the harbor as the sun starts peeking over the horizon, coffee in hand, watching the shoreline fade into the distance. Our 28-foot Baha Cruiser is equipped with top-notch electronics to find the fish, and we've got a spread of rods ready to go. We'll be trolling with a mix of downriggers, dipsy divers, and maybe even some copper line - whatever it takes to get our lures in the strike zone. The action can be fast and furious when we hit a school, so be ready! Don't worry if you're new to this style of fishing; the captain and crew will walk you through everything. Before you know it, you'll be reeling in your first Lake Michigan salmon or trout.
On Lake Michigan, trolling is the name of the game for targeting salmon and trout. We'll be pulling a spread of lines at different depths, using a combination of downriggers, dipsy divers, and lead core lines. Our go-to lures? Spoons are always a favorite, with classics like the Dreamweaver Spin Doctor and Silver Streak producing day in and day out. We'll mix in some flasher and fly combos too, especially when the Cohos are thick. The key is matching the bait to the conditions and what the fish are keyed in on that day. Water temperature, sun penetration, and bait movements all play a role in where we'll find the fish. Trust me, there's nothing quite like the sound of a screaming drag when a big Chinook slams your lure!
Chinook Salmon: Also known as King Salmon, these are the heavyweight champs of the Great Lakes. Chinooks in Lake Michigan can top 30 pounds, and they fight like their lives depend on it. These bruisers are most active in the cooler months, with peak season typically running from July through September. When a big King hits, hold on tight - they're known for blistering runs that'll have your arms burning and a grin plastered on your face.
Coho Salmon: While not as big as their Chinook cousins, Cohos make up for it with their acrobatics and sheer numbers. These silver bullets average 3-8 pounds and are often found in schools, meaning when you find them, the action can be non-stop. Cohos are typically more surface-oriented, so we often target them with higher lines and shallower presentations. Spring and early summer are prime time for Cohos, but you can catch them throughout the season.
Steelhead: Lake Michigan's steelhead are essentially rainbow trout that have adapted to a life in the big water. These high-flying fish are known for their spectacular aerial displays when hooked. Steelhead can be caught year-round in Lake Michigan, but they're especially active in the spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler. Average size is 5-10 pounds, but fish pushing 20 pounds aren't unheard of.
Lake Trout: Often overshadowed by their more glamorous salmon cousins, Lake Trout are the native powerhouses of Lake Michigan. These deep-water dwellers can live for decades and grow to impressive sizes. While they might not make the acrobatic runs of a steelhead or the blistering speed of a Chinook, hooking into a big 'laker' is like trying to pull a refrigerator off the bottom. They're a year-round target and are especially popular when other species are less active.
Let me tell you, there's something special about fishing Lake Michigan that keeps folks coming back year after year. Maybe it's the rush of battling a chrome-bright King Salmon as it tries to spool your reel. Or the peaceful moments as the sun rises over the water, with the Chicago skyline barely visible on the horizon. Could be the camaraderie that develops on board, swapping fish stories and sharing laughs. Whatever it is, Lake Michigan has a way of getting under your skin. And let's not forget the eating - nothing beats fresh-caught salmon on the grill after a successful day on the water. Whether you're a serious angler looking to check some species off your list or just want a fun day out with friends and family, our charter delivers the goods.
Alright, let's get you out on the water! Our 6-hour Lake Michigan charters are perfect for both seasoned anglers and first-timers looking to experience the thrill of Great Lakes fishing. Remember, we're running Thursday through Sunday from May 1st to September 5th, but spots fill up fast, especially during peak salmon season. Chinook salmon, or "kings," are the heavyweight champs of Lake Michigan. These bruisers can top 30 pounds, with most in the 15-20 pound range. They're found in deeper, colder water and are most active at dawn and dusk. Late summer sees them start moving closer to shore as they prepare to run upstream. Chinooks are prized for their powerful fights and rich, flavorful meat. To hook one, try downriggers with large spoons or plugs that mimic baitfish. These fish are light-sensitive, so fishing deeper on sunny days is key. Here's a pro tip: keep your drag set light at first - these big boys will make some strong initial runs. Whether you're after a trophy fish or just want to tangle with a real powerhouse, Chinook salmon are hard to beat.

Coho salmon are a blast to catch in Lake Michigan. These silver bullets usually run 8-12 pounds and are known for their acrobatic leaps when hooked. You'll find them in the cooler, deeper parts of the lake, often near structure. Late summer and early fall are prime time as they start staging for their spawning runs. Cohos are popular for their hard-fighting spirit and excellent flavor. To land one, try trolling with bright-colored lures like chartreuse or pink spoons. These fish have great eyesight, so using lighter line can make a big difference. A local trick is to vary your trolling speed - sometimes a sudden change triggers a bite. Whether you're after the thrill of the catch or a delicious dinner, coho salmon deliver on both fronts.

Lake trout are the old-timers of Lake Michigan, living long and growing big. These deep-water dwellers can hit 20-30 pounds, with most catches in the 5-15 pound range. You'll find them suspended over deep basins, especially during summer when they seek out cold water. Spring and fall are great times to target lakers as they move shallower. These fish put up a steady, powerful fight and make excellent table fare. Jigging is a top technique - try a Jigging Rap or soft plastic swimbait. One trick is to work your jig with sharp, erratic movements to trigger strikes. Lake trout might not leap like other species, but their size and strength make for an exciting battle. Plus, their firm, orange flesh is hard to beat for a fish fry.

Rainbow trout are a favorite target in Lake Michigan, known for their acrobatic fights and tasty meat. These colorful fish typically range from 2-8 pounds and love cold, clean water. You'll find them near gravelly shorelines or in downstream flows, and they go deeper as summer heats up. Late evening is prime time to catch them feeding. Rainbow trout hit a variety of lures, but flies and small spinners work great. Try nymphing if you're fly fishing - it's deadly effective. These fish are fun to catch year-round, but spring and fall are especially good as the water cools. One local tip: keep your bait or lure off the bottom and try retrieving it at different speeds until you find what the trout want that day. Rainbow trout put up an exciting fight and make for some fantastic eating, so they're always a crowd-pleaser on our trips.
